The Ethnographic Sampling Project

What is the Ethnographic Sampling Project? It’s actually quite simple. We are a network of people who love sharing video, photos, audio and thoughts about why people do what they do, think what they think, buy what they buy. We believe technology has enabled observation and the ability to capture a moment on an unprecedented scale, creating a space where individuals can become part of a larger community.

The Ethnographic Sampling Project is designed to sample brief moments of life by tapping into the citizen anthropologist. Members of the group are given periodic challenges to capture specific experiences and share those experiences for discussion. The goal is to gain insight into human behavior and consumer culture through a dynamic range of personal perspectives and social contexts. Our hope is to prove a new, collaborative model for ethnography we call "open" ethnography.

Once our community reaches 100 new members in a quarter, we will fund a $1,000 grant to recognize the outstanding contributions of one member. That person must demonstrate the value of citizen anthropology through quality content, relevant insight and regular participation. The winner will be notified after the end of the quarter and featured on the ESP blog.

Remodeling the kitchen.

Countertops and cabinets, ovens and back splashes. The need to turn ugly or worn things into something new and vibrant is powerful. When you do it yourself rather than relying on another it adds value to the experience, creating a sense of mastery. Cost is of course a factor, but more important is the sense of engagement and personal value. So too is the sense of shared accomplishment since people rarely do the work entirely alone. Remodeling builds a sense of community. It reestablishes filial bonds.

This was shot in KC, MO over the life of the kitchen remodeling project. It was part of a larger remodeling project.

Mess leads to new counter tops

With age comes neglect. With neglect comes messiness. With messiness comes the need to redesign and replace. It’s like what we do in the US with our cars — as they age they become dumping grounds. As they grow filthy we clean and restore less and less. Instead we replace. The initial thought to purchase is couched in terms of desire, but as the potential costs begin to become realities, we change the language to focus on the investment. So at what point in the consideration process does the shift happen? And what underlying language speaks to the underlying need, namely that we want something new and lovely?
