A Death in the Family?
Sympathy for the Puppy, a favorite song. In an earlier day this would have been seen as strange — indeed, in many places today it would be seen as strange. The role of the pet in our lives has gone through tremendous changes in a postmodern world. The shift has been away from its function to something more symbolic in nature. Something that goes beyond the love of a possession to something more profound. The dog is status, it is power, it is confidante, it is surrogate, it is an extension of identity.
