The Ethnographic Sampling Project

What is the Ethnographic Sampling Project? It’s actually quite simple. We are a network of people who love sharing video, photos, audio and thoughts about why people do what they do, think what they think, buy what they buy. We believe technology has enabled observation and the ability to capture a moment on an unprecedented scale, creating a space where individuals can become part of a larger community.

The Ethnographic Sampling Project is designed to sample brief moments of life by tapping into the citizen anthropologist. Members of the group are given periodic challenges to capture specific experiences and share those experiences for discussion. The goal is to gain insight into human behavior and consumer culture through a dynamic range of personal perspectives and social contexts. Our hope is to prove a new, collaborative model for ethnography we call "open" ethnography.

Once our community reaches 100 new members in a quarter, we will fund a $1,000 grant to recognize the outstanding contributions of one member. That person must demonstrate the value of citizen anthropology through quality content, relevant insight and regular participation. The winner will be notified after the end of the quarter and featured on the ESP blog.

V-Day: Family Outing

This year we decided to spend Valentine’s Day as a family and with friends. We met up with another couple who has three children (we have one child). We went to lunch (local-family owned pizza bar) and then took the kids to a local indoor play arena. Both places allow children to be loud, allowing the parents more time to hang out vs. correcting their children’s public behavior.

The children spent most of their time together at the water table. Then the Dads and boys split from the Moms and girls. The guys went to the foam factory and spent two hours shooting each other with giant Nerf blasters. The girls went into “Imagination Land” and played “life”: house, grocery store, pizza parlor, bank, etc.

After saying good-bye for the day each family went home with tired children, allowing for “adult time” without having to hire a babysitter.

Valentine's Day card for Grandma

Cards are designed for the recipient, rightly so. But when shopping with our little girl for a Valentine's Day card for Grandma the cards are all flowery, and she gravitated to the ones FOR her (Disney, from grandmother). Interestingly enough grandma appreciated the hand picked (altered) card more than a generic flowery card designed 'for her'. Conversely when shopping for Valentine's cards for preschool our little girl picked out what she wanted in bulk, not what the recipients would like.

CVS Figurines

Just in the potpourri. candle, air freshener at one end of the card sections at a CVS Store at 127th and Antioch road. My children (ages 10 & 7) found them with other figurines and sundries at the end of the aisle that leads one (or more consumers) to the first row of Hallmark Cards.
