The Ethnographic Sampling Project

What is the Ethnographic Sampling Project? It’s actually quite simple. We are a network of people who love sharing video, photos, audio and thoughts about why people do what they do, think what they think, buy what they buy. We believe technology has enabled observation and the ability to capture a moment on an unprecedented scale, creating a space where individuals can become part of a larger community.

The Ethnographic Sampling Project is designed to sample brief moments of life by tapping into the citizen anthropologist. Members of the group are given periodic challenges to capture specific experiences and share those experiences for discussion. The goal is to gain insight into human behavior and consumer culture through a dynamic range of personal perspectives and social contexts. Our hope is to prove a new, collaborative model for ethnography we call "open" ethnography.

Once our community reaches 100 new members in a quarter, we will fund a $1,000 grant to recognize the outstanding contributions of one member. That person must demonstrate the value of citizen anthropology through quality content, relevant insight and regular participation. The winner will be notified after the end of the quarter and featured on the ESP blog.

FOR THOSE SENDING VIDEO: You want to break the rules and send a full on 1080p - 720p HD video with production value on par with Michael Bay. Cool. Unless you have your own email server, however, you're going to have to post that video on YouTube or Vimeo, take the embed html code, and place that in the body of your submission email. Got it? Get to it.

ESP CHALLENGE #1: GO FORTH CITIZENS!

Welcome to the ESP Project.

Because the ESP is all about the love, the first challenge is timed to fit in with Valentine’s Day. We are asking contributors to capture images and video of people buying flowers, sharing presents, grabbing a secret kiss, or for those without a significant other, hanging out with friends. How do people celebrate this day? How do they avoid it?

Capture video, images or observations, attach them to an outgoing email and send them to: post@ethnosampro.posterous.com

That's it. The content should post within the hour. We ask that you limit video posts to about 2 minutes maximum and limit photos to no more than 4 images.
